Registered apprenticeships are formal career training programs that offer a combination of structured on-the-job training and related technical instruction to employees to prepare them for occupations that demand a high level of skill. Apprenticeship training standards are industry-driven and established by an industry or program sponsor who determines the skill requirements needed to build and sustain a quality workforce
Apprenticeships can last from one to six years (occupation dependent). During this time, apprentices work and learn under the direction of experienced journey workers. Over time, apprentices are provided the diversity and complexity of training that leads to becoming highly skilled in their chosen occupations. As they gain skill, they are compensated through an increase in wages
Currently the Office of Education and Training Services of Vermont Tech is the educational center for all registered apprentices in the Electrical and Plumbing Trades in the lower Connecticut River Valley region. Vermont Tech's curriculum consists of 144 hours of instruction each year for 4 years in either the Electrical or Plumbing trades. Upon successful completion of Vermont Tech's program, graduates will recieve 15 Vermont State College credits for their work in the Electrical curriculum and 13 credits in the Plumbing curriculum. Classes for technical instruction begin in September and end in late March.
